January Player tip of the month

Woodsball: Playing spools and wooden triangles can be tricky. Try to conform yourself to the shape of the bunker your playing, this may require you turn your marker and hopper slightly to avoid exposing them too much. When playing these types of bunkers tight, always try to watch the paint coming in to determine the direction it is coming from. When you have determined the direction put yourself in a position to snap shoot out to that location to try to gain outage on that player. When playing spools always be careful not to expose your knee or foot at the bottom of the reel. Spools can be rather uncomfortable to play out of from your knees, whenever possible play spools from a half squatted position, and change hands when changing sides. Also watch out for players shooting through the center hole.

Speedball: Arguably the best drill for increasing your efficiency on the speedball field is the run through drill. This drill can be done without using paint and in my opinion make you a better player faster than any other drill out there. Basically you are tyring to maintain accuracy shooting while running. This drill should be done on a grassy field to avoid tripping over things. Start from your fixed object, get your feet in the ready position, put your marker in front of your face, focus on an object and run to another fixed object. Use different locations so you don’t get used to the same one. You can mix up different objects to focus on and use more than one in a drill so you can be shooting at two players at the same move. After you do this without paint and become comfortable, try it with paint, you will notice yourself getting better very quickly. This drill will help you get comfortable with moving when a move is mandatory.
